FARAs OAT Farm Guest House is an integral part of our working organic farm and is situated in the rural, north east region of Romania .

The first of the unique painted monasteries of Moldavia are Humor and Voronet, situated 43 km from Spataresti, approximately one hours drive to the north west.

.

The OAT Farm guest house offers accommodation for up to 10 guests in two small en suite apartments each sleeping 4 guests, ideal for families, and one en suite double/ twin room. Breakfast and an evening meal are served in the farm Dining Room while packed lunches can also be arranged. Traditional Romanian food of the region is served using fresh organic produce from the farm. Guests are given a warm welcome by the proprietors, who are resident at the farm and both speak English. There is a traditional style lounge with views to the Carpathians. Children are welcome and can experience first hand a working organic farm.

OAT Farm is located in the farming hamlet of Spataresti, close to the main DN2 arterial road, just outside Falticeni. The Orthodox Church and a small shop are within walking distance of the farm while the nearest of the unique Painted Monasteries are approximateluy one hours drive. The town of Suceava is situated 30 km to the north along the main DN2 road.

NOTE: We strongly recommend that anybody considering driving to the region from Bucharest take a couple of days over the journey and detour via the pretty eastern Carpathians, rather than following the busy DN2 which skirts the mountains and is notorious for fatal road accidents.

Our holidays are flexible based on 3-7 nights accommodation and scheduled flights to either Bucharest, Iasi or Suceava with transfers. The easiest schedule is with Tarom to Suceava as follows:

Tarom RO392 Heathrow 12:30 Bucharest Otopeni 17:45
Tarom RO801 Bucharest Otopeni 20:45 Suceava 22:30 (extra stop in Bacau en route)

Tarom RO802 Suceava 06:25 Bucharest Otopeni 08:00 (extra stop in Bacau en route)
Tarom RO391 Bucharest Otopeni 10:00 London Heathrow 11:30

Outbound Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun; Return Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun
Transfer from Suceava takes approximately 30 minutes

Alternatively, there are daily connections to the city of Iasi, the cultural centre of Moldavia, as follows:

Tarom RO392 Heathrow 12:30 Bucharest Otopeni 17:45
Tarom RO709 Bucharest Otopeni 20:45 Iasi 21:50

Tarom RO710 Iasi 06:50 Bucharest Otopeni 07:55
Tarom RO391 Bucharest Otopeni 10:00 London Heathrow 11:30

Transfer takes approximately two hours. Due to the late arrival and early departure of flights in Iasi, you may wish to consider overnight stays in a city hotel.

ALL SCHEDULES SUBJECT TO CHANGE
Sucevita Monastery
The other sensible option would be to ue British Airways flights combined with intercity rail connections as follows (same package price):

Outbound:
British Airways BA886 London Heathrow 09:40 Bucharest Otopeni 14:50
Meet & Greet Service, transfer to station (guide remains until train departs)
Train: IC553 Bucharest Nord 17:00 Suceava Nord 22:57 - 1st Class

Return:
Train: IC552 Suceava Nord 05:00; Bucharest Nord 11:06 - 1st Class
Meet & Greet Service, transfer to airport
British Airways BA887 Bucharest Otopeni 15:40 London Heathrow 17:15

Alternative transport includes car hire from Bucharest. However, if taking the later option we recommend avoiding the direct and congested road to Suceava which also carries convoys of heavy trucks. The alternative route via Brasov, Baile Tusnad, the eastern Carpathians and the Bicaz Gorge is very scenic though a stopover would be required en route. An example car hire option with stopovers is indicated in the price section below

The following day trips are available from the OAT Farm Guesthouse. These are escorted tours for 2 -10 people by car or minibus and include a highly professional, knowledgeable and english-speaking guide:

1. The Monasteries of Agapia, Varatec, Neamt and Râsca, and Neamt Fortress, to the south west

2. The Monasteries of Dragomârna, Zamca (Armenian monastery ruins), and Patrauti, Stephen the Great's churches at Baia, and the painted church at Arbore

3. Classic Painted Monasteries Tour: Voronet, Moldovita, Sucevita, Humor and the Cacica Saltmines

4. Scenic Eastern Carpathians tour: Lake Bicaz, Bicaz Gorge and Ceahlau (the 'Magic Mountain')

5. Vanatori-Neamt Natural Park - Visitors centre and Bison centre with a registered guide (details to follow)

Two full day tours are included in the 3 night packages while 3 are included in the longer packages. Additional tours can be booked as required. Day tours all include a donation to FARA.

OAT organic farn

FARA is a registered charity both in UK and Romania and has been actively working with orphaned and abandoned children in Romania since 1991 when the deplorable conditions of Romanias state orphanages were first revealed.

In Romanian FARA means without and the charity is dedicated to transforming the lives of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe children without a secure home, a loving family, education or training whilst giving Christian values and often for the first time, hope for the future.

Since the beginning, FARA has made a dramatic difference to change and restore the lives of over 500 vulnerable children from a life of devastation to a life of hope. The charity was originally founded to alleviate the suffering of children in state orphanages by providing an alternative care provision.

The effect of institutional care on the physical and emotional development of children has been widely publicised and acknowledged. FARAs aim is to provide and develop services offering children an environment as close as possible to family life where they can be nurtured and healed to enable them to grow up and have hope for the future.

FARA is one of the few experienced charities working in partnership with the Romanian authorities to implement new ways of caring for Romanias abandoned children. FARAs concept is to provide a long term commitment to the children in our care and works closely with the Department of Child Protection to influence change.

FARA also aims to develop new programmes to offer day care and medical expertise for children with disabilities so desperately needed to support their families to stay together.

As part of FARAs long term commitment to children in their care - OAT (Organic, Agricultural, Training) farm plans to increase training opportunities and give employment to disadvantaged youngsters leaving care

We will continue to help those most in need and address the causes of poverty by being a voice for the poor and making our influence felt at Government.
FARA seeks to give practical answers to poverty and to give children a family for those without.

Our work in Romania not only restores the lives of those we care for but also the communities in which they live this means thousand more people will benefit form our investment in their future.

OAT ORGANIC FARM

The OAT (Organic, Agricultural, Training) Farm was started three years ago at the suggestion of Fara's Royal Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales whose enthusiasm for organic farming is well known. Why Organic? In Romania many of the farmers are poor, and cannot afford fertilizers or pesticides. Generally farms are very small consisting of 2 or 3 hectares at most producing maize year upon year with dwindling yields. The OAT farm concept is not only to train students but to also become a show farm where local farmers can come and learn about sustainable agriculture without the need for costly fertilizers and pesticides. A reed bed system for simple waste water disposal has been constructed. In addition to Agriculture, there is also horticultire which together with our small dairy herd and pig unit produce a wide range of organic fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, meat, animal fodder, and milk products.

The OAT Farm owns 25 hectares of farmland divided into three areas to illustrate three types of rotation:

" Live-stock, grazing and haymaking
" Vegetable rotation
" Arable for winter feed

There are also a number of poly-tunnels for specialist vegetable production and orchards. All farm building have been built in traditional Romanian style of architecture. There is a large building to house the animals and dairy, food processing and carpentry workshops as well as a residential training centre.
