NEWSflash ..... NEWSflash.....

SAVE THE VASER VALLEY FOREST RAILWAY - VISEU DE SUS

Severe flooding along the border with Ukraine on 25-26 July caused considerable damage in Maramures. Funds have been allocated fpr rebuilding houses washed away in Maramures and Suceava Counties. One of the worst hit areas was the Vaser Valley where large sections of trackbed and bridges were lost to floodwaters. A campaign has beenset up to raise funds to reopen the line, which is not only unique as the last steam-hauled forestry railway, but is an essential lifeline to the people and communities of this remote mountain valley. Please see: www.cffviseu.ro/MocanitaNews.htm for updates. Latest: there is a limited service as far as Valea Scradei which may soon be reconnectd to Novat.

Holidays with a Heart
- a Heart for People, Wildlife, Environment, Heritage

Beyond the Forest aims to provide a travel service of the highest quality, integrity and professionalism which, as a by-product, will significantly contribute to the sustainable development of rural tourism in Romania. Many of our holidays benefit local people through developing responsible tourism in their communities, our direct use of local guides and through our support for charities, restoration and conservation projects. Look out for out for our 'Holidays with a Heart' logo.

Our Top Tips for ROMANIA in 2009

MARAMURES - this magical region is one of the last enclaves of traditional rural life still remaining in Europe; visit now before EU and Romanian laws change this magical, pastoral region with its enchanting landscapes forever. We arrange connections from Cluj (new direct services with Wizz work very well) or Bucharest, or from the new Austrian Airlines service to Baia Mare

ANOTHER EUROPE - delightful, quality breaks based in the picturesque Saxon village of Cisnadioara on the edge of Sibiu. Excellent value all inclusive holidays based in a British-run pension with a special focus on cuisine and a range of activities and excursions into Saxon Transylvania, the Carpathians and the Cindrel Mountains from just £ 589.00 per person excl. flights

TOUCH OF CLASS - fully, inclusive holidays with a genuine Transylvanian Count in the Brasov area. These popular holidays are an ideal introduction to Transylvania with a focus on cultural heritage, natural history and adventure. Accommodation is in beautiful, restored houses in the small Szekely village of Miclosoara (Miklosvar)

FLY TO REGIONAL AIRPORTS to avoid the mayhem and congested streets of Bucharest. There are connecting scheduled flights to Sibiu, Cluj, Timisoara, Iasi, Targu Mures and Baia Mare and direct, low-cost services to Cluj and Timisoara with WIZZ from Luton. Alternatively, take a domestic service from Bucharest to most major towns in Romania.

Transylvania by Bronwen Riley (published by Frances Lincoln)

Many people think Transylvania is a fictitious land, like Ruritania or Narnia. It is the birthplace of Dracula. It is the place where dragons live in Harry Potter and the country to which the Pied Piper spirited the children of Hamelin. Indeed, although Transylvania is a real place, truth here is often stranger than fiction. Streams run with silver, the mountains are full of gold, dinosaur nests are found in river beds and haystacks in trees. It is a country of striking cultural contrasts: of Orthodox monasteries, Gothic churches and Communist follies. While the 'King of the Gypsies' lives in a grandiose modern palace, the future King of England has bought a modest peasant's house in a remote village. Transylvania only recently awakened from the deep sleep of Communism and, though life is now changing fast, traditions remain here that elsewhere died out long ago.
Transylvania captures this vanishing world in words and pictures.

Treeflights.com do one thing ~ they plant trees for people who fly.

When we take a flight we burn up hundreds of litres of fuel, a non-renewable resource that took millions of years to make, and we produce a lot of CO2, the main culprit for global warming. Theres no way of avoiding it, flying is inherently environmentally destructive and we shouldnt do any more of it than we have to. Planting a tree is an ecologically constructive thing to do. Trees use the suns energy to absorb CO2, taking it out of the atmosphere and turning it into the renewable material that we call wood. Trees also encourage biodiversity and are fantastic air purifiers. However, they take ages to grow.

When you order a Treeflight that this is not a quick-fix and your flight will not suddenly become carbon neutral. But the tree planted for you will make a significant, positive difference, over time, to our atmosphere.

For further information, or to order a Treeflight please visit: Treeflights.com

A trip to Vienna, Budapest or Bucharest by train would emit 95% less carbon dioxide than the equivalent flight. Consider taking the TRAIN
