* * * STOP PRESS * * * WARNING BLACK SEA HOTEL PRICES UPDATED 02.07.2008 Hotels on the Black Sea have increased their prices on several occasions recently. Our opinion is that they are now overprice and offer very poor value for money, especially when compared to hotels in alternative destinations, many of them with a better local infrastructure and far better services . e.g. Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Croatia Expect to pay 4-star+ prices for basic 3-star accommodation. Local food and drink prices may also be inflated. |

Some of the prices are laughable - for example Hotel Rex in Mamaia is now charging Euro 400 - 500 per suite per night. (Claims to be 5*, but not by Western standards) Of course it is not only the hotel that has lost all sense of reality but clearly its lientele of Romanian businessmen or politicians have more money than sense. Other reasons given include greed on the part of proprietors, and also a bizarre desire to focus on weekend breaks. In other words, hotels which already have a short season are trying to cover costs over just a few weekends! The situation is unlikely to change while there are Romanians still willing to pay these prices (it is worth noting that the average monthly wage in Romania is less than half the rate quoted for one night at the Hotel Rex) We have also received reports of poor service (imagine your waitress stopping half way through pouring a drink to answer her mobile phone) and of dirty beaches (often littered with cigarette ends and other rubbish) . We recommend you consider alternative destinations for a beach holiday; Bulgaria and Croatia offer excellent value for high quality accommodation and facilities. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
We only offer quality accommodation on the Black Sea Coast and avoid the Communist Era high-rise hotels wherever possible, in particular those that are still awaiting privatisation and refurbishment. We also avoid the more crowded resorts or those awaiting investment in infrastructure and other improvements, such as the dreadful Amfiteatru - Belvedere - Panoramic Hotels at Olimp. The following hotels can be incorporated with scheduled flights or can be booked as part of an extended holiday in combinations with other regions of Romania. |

HOTEL BEST WESTERN SAVOY 4* (Mamaia) The Savoy is one of the best appointed of Mamaia's hotel with its own private beach, a selection of restaurants, fitness room and sauna. It occupies a pleasant location beyond the Rex at the quieter northern tip of Mamaia. Completely overpriced! There are better value options available. Bookings on request only HOTEL IAKI 4* (Mamaia) Smart hotel situated near the Riviera with excellent facilities including restaurants, bars, shopping, internet access, kindergarten, sauna, indoor and outdoor pools, sports ground and gym. This hotel was established by the footballer Gheorge Hagi. Good alternative to the REX |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
HOTEL MAJESTIC 3*+ (Mamaia) Popular resort hotel, refurbished in 2001. Located near Hotel Rex in central Mamaia. Good facilities including private beach and outdoor pool. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
HOTEL RIVIERA 3* (Mamaia) Hotel Riviera is a very popular high-rise hotel with a long tradition of catering for British and Scandinavian guests. This hotel was completely refurbished to a high standard in 2001. It benefits from an outdoor pool, balconies and air-conditioning. Good location in the northern part of the resort within easy reach of the bazaar and some excellent restaurants. HOTEL VICTORIA 2* (Mamaia) Standard high-rise resort hotel, partly renovated in 2002. We only offer rooms in the renovated part of the hotel. Situated south of the Bazaar and Casino, towards the south beach in Mamaia. Useful alternative when 3-star hotels are fully booked but poor value in high season compared to Riviera. HOTEL EUROPA 4*+ (Eforie Nord) Hotel Europa, Eforie Nord: possibly the best hotel on the entire coast. The Europa reopened in autumn 2003 after a complete rebuild. Large, spacious light- filled rooms, with balconies, cable TV, internet access, minibar and hairdryer, and a wide range of facilities including restaurants, terrace, conference centre, swimming pool, childrens' pool, private beach with yacht club, and its own state of the art spa and health centre. Disabled lifts and facilities available. Expect to pay up to £ 100.00 per room, high season - still relatively good value compared to others due to facilities. HOTEL ASTORIA 4* (Eforie Nord) A more, traditional spa hotel with an elegant terrace, which was fully refurbished in 2003. Excellent facilities and good location in the centre of the resort. The Astoria comprises restaurant, private beach and rooms with balconies. Within easy reach of the main spa centres VOX MARIS CLUB RESORT 3* (Costinesti) - NEW This attractive low-rise hotel is situated in the youthful resort of Costinesti. The resort has a large sandy beach, a wide range watersports restaurants, cafes, bars, discos and a summer theatre. The Vox Maris Club Resort is built around 7 hectares of landscaped gardens and was formerly used by Ceausescu for entertaining guests. Rooms arev located in low rise villas and have en suite bathrooms (shower only), TV, fridge and telephone and a balcony or terrace. Other facilities include two large outdoor swimming pools, childrens' pool, health club, choice of restaurants and a variety of watersports on the nearby beach. |

HOTEL MAJESTIC OLIMP 3* (Neptun-Olimp) Recently reopened resort hotel situated close to the Amfiteatru tourist complex in Olimp. This bright orange, high rise hotel was fully rebuilt and refurbished in 2003 and comprises good facilities injcluding an outdoor pool, kindergarten, childrens' park, restaurant, terrace, bar, sauma, fitness room and a private beach. All rooms air conditioned. Good value, suitable for children HOTEL ALBERT 3* (Neptun) Hotel Albert, Neptun: private air-conditioned hotel built in 2002 and located in the heart of this popular resort, within easy reach of the spa complex and Ceausescu's villa. Good facilities including restaurant, bar and terrace, and personal service. Useful when Cocor fully booked, otherwise poor value in comparison HOTEL DANA 3* (Venus) One of our favourites: a low rise hotel set in lush. almost tropical gardens with restaurants, bars and a very nice outdoor pool and pool bar. Fully refurbished in 2002. Rooms are simple but have air-conditioning units. Only drawback is that it takes a few minutes to walk down to the hotel's private beach. A firm favourite and very popular. More peaceful seeting amidst private gardens. Not such good value as in previous years due to recent price rises. HOTEL MAJESTIC JUPTER 3* (Jupiter) Good value resort hotel in the smaller resort of Jupiter, near to Venus. The hotel was fully refurbished in 2004 and is situated 150 metres from the beach. All rooms are air conditioned with cable TV. Other facilities include restaurant, terrace, bar, sauna, fitness room, outdoor pool and childrens' pool. Excellent value, located in a smaller resort with fewer facilities. However, within easy reach of Venus, Neptun and Mangalia. HELLIOS INN 3* (2 Mai) Excellent value traditional inn in the rather laid back village of 2 Mai (Doi Mai), traditionally the haunt of artists and intellectuals near Mangalia and close to the border with Bulgaria. More relaxed than the purpose built resorts, 2 Mai and neighbouring Vama Veche have excellent beaches though they become very popular with students during the main summer season. The Hellios Inn is a comfortable 3-star hotel with en suite rooms, terrace, swimming pool, a very good, rustic restaurant serving Balkan specialities, and a wine cellar. Excellent value alternative to the modern resorts |

BLACK SEA HOTEL BLACKLIST We recommend completely avoiding the following Hotels HOTEL COCOR 4*, Neptun Formerly Hotel Galati. Recently renovated low rise hotel with reasonable prices. Due to corrupt management practices there is a serious risk of arriving to discover that your reservation has been cancelled without any recourse. The Hotel reserves the right to cancel reservations if they receive more lucrative group bookings, and will willingly cancel a booking to accommodate officials or higher paying customers. HOTELS AMFITEATRU, BELEVEDERE, PANORAMIC - Neptun Olimp An ugly concrete hotel complex in the 'brutalistic' style popular in the 1960s. Good facilities but in dire need of refurbishment. Rooms tired and worn. Complaints received about the water quality of the lagoon, which has suffered from effluent from leaking pipes in the past. Overcrowded in the summer. HOTEL REX 5*(?) , Mamaia The Rex is, in theory, one of Mamaia's premier properties, a stylish Art Deco hotel wtrh a picturesque swimming pool standing on a terrace above the beach It is located at the quieter, more exclusive northern end of the resort. It boasts its own private beach and a very airy, attractive ground floor with restaurant and bars overlooking the shore. However, it is utterly overpriced and would be rated as 4-star maximum in most Western European resorts. It still has the feel of a 1970s communist era hotel in many respects. OVERPRICED - Euro 400-500 per room, high season; can be much higher! |
