We have listed a selection of recommended accommodation for Bistrita Nasaud region below. This includes the firm favourites of the Dracula trail: the Coroana de Aur (Golden Krone) in Bistrita and the Hotel Castel Dracula on the Borgo Pass. We also have private accommodation in the Somes and Ilva Valleys, and the excellent Stefan cel Mare Riding Centre which offers a host of adventure holidays and activities. It is also the start point for our 4 - hour 'Jonathan Harker' Trail - a horse and cart or carriage ride following tracks through the wolf-infested forests of the Borgo Pass to Hotel Castel Dracula.

ACCOMMODATION PRICES

Prices are in the order of £ 20.00-£ 25.00 (GBP Sterling) per person for full-board accommodation in quality, private guesthouses with en suite facilities. Private, family-run hotels are in the same range for bed & breakfast accommodation sharing a twin or double room. Larger, 3-star hotels may be slightly more expensive while private pensions start at around £15.00 per person, bed & breakfast.

Named after Stoker's "Golden Krone", today's 'Coroana de Aur' stands in the town centre of Bistrita, opposite the town hall. The restaurant Coronita, a traditional building annexed to the hotel, is allegedly the original Golden Krone.

This modern, recently refurbished hotel comprises 109 rooms and 4 apartments. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms, cable TV, minibar and direct dial telephone. The hotel comprises two restaurants including the Jonathan Harker Bar where you can sample Harker's final meal of robber steak washed down by Golden Mediasch wine. The main restaurant is a 4-star restaurant serving a selection of a la carte meals. Other facilities include a lift, souvenir shop, laundry service, conferecne facilities and travel agency.

HOTEL CASTEL DRACULA 3*, Piatra Fântinele ('Borgo' Pass)

Built in the late1970s, Hotel Castel Dracula, resembles a castle and stands at an altitude of 1116 metres on the 'Borgo' Pass. This is where Bram Stoker envisaged the Vampire Count's castle in his famous novel Dracula. The location is remote (apart from the main road) with glorious views over the Bargau Mountains and over a high plateau to the peaks of the surrounding Rodnei, Suhard and Caliman. There are plenty of walking trails meandering into the woods and up into theCaliman Mountains, including a path to the twelve apostles rock, and the old Roman road which passes close to the Castle from Lunca Ilvei in the Ilva Valley to the village of Dornisoara.

Hotel Castle Dracula is probably the only hotel with a crypt and a cemetery! It is rather kitsch in some respects, but this newly refurbished, hotel is not only an essential stop on Dracula itineraries. Facilities include an excellent restaurant, private restaurants and functions rooms, a billiards room, terrace and and the 'Moon' bar situated in the tower.

Hotel Castle Dracula comprises 65 rooms and 3 apartments with en suite bathroom, telephone, minibar and TV. The 'White Apartment' on the corner of the hotel facing the sunset, which was reputedly reserved for recent-day 'Dracula' - Ceausescu, can be reserved on request. A ski lift operates during the winter months. Annual Halloween celebrations including a Masked Ball and Banquet take place here but are booked many months in advance as most rooms are reserved for tour groups.

SPECIAL: why not arrive at Castel Dracula in style, following in Jonathan Harker's footsteps? We can organise a horse and cart, carriage or even sleigh to convey you up the pass from the valley below. You will follow remote cart tracks through the wolf-infested forests and flower-filled meadows to reach the pass summit at the Roman Road. The journey takes about four hours with a picnic en route.
Accommodation and horse riding activities can also be arranged prior to your adventure!

Stefan cel Mare Guesthouse provides year-round comfortable, modern accommodation in the traditional village of Lunca Ilvei in norther Transylvania. The guesthouse was completed in 2007 to comply with current EU regulations. There are ten twin and double rooms with en suite bathrooms, and a dormitory comprising six bunk beds for groups. There are also two guest lounges and a dining room providing breakfast, lunch and evening meals. The kitchen uses locally-grown, often organic, ingredients to create traditional Transylvanian dishes.

Stefan cel Mare guesthouse is situated 3 km from the main railway station at the end of a beautiful mountain valley surrounded by the unspoilt landscapes of the Rodnei, Suhard and Bargau Mountains. This is a peaceful place to spend a few days and witness the traditional farming and forestry practices, and the natural wilderness of this remote region. The village is served by local express trains between Cluj and Bucovina, and transfers can be organised. Otherwise you can take the long valley road from the Somes Valley at Ilva Mica which ends in the village.

The guesthouse is attached to the popular English-run Stefan cel Mare Riding Centre. A wide selection of extended riding holidays operate throughout the Spring, summer and early autumn. In addition trail riding, horse and cart or carriage activities are available for guests staying at the guesthouse throughout the year. These also include winter programmes such as sleigh rides and folk music. Guests staying here can explore the surrounding mountains on horse back, by horse and cart or even on bicycle of by foot. Visit the last remaining shepherds camps or wander through flower filled meadows, or simply relax and witness an easier pace of life. This is a region renowned for its natural history, including healthy populations opf wolves, bears and lynx. For the not so faint at heart there is the unique possibility of following the Dracula trail by horse and cart or carriage along tracks through wolf infested forests up to the Borgo Pass summit. The journey takes four hours. with a picnic en route, and ends at Hotel Castle Dracula where you can spend a night or two before continuing your travels through Transylvania. Alternatively, you can continue your journey from Lunca Ilvei by train with convenient connections to the city of Cluj, Maramures, Bistrita or even the famous Painted Monasteries of Bucovina.
