VELIKO TURNOVO

The ancient town of Veliko Turnovo is blessed with one of the most romantic townscapes in Eastern Europe, and is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding region, rich in cultural heritage, monasteries and beautiful landscapes. It is also well situated between Sofia and Bucharest and within easy reach of the Danube port at Ruse, the Valley of Roses and the second city of Plovdiv. We can provide a car and driver/ guide for tours to the surrounding region including Arbanassi, Ivanovo Rock Monasteries, Bozhentsi heritage village, Etura village museum and the crafts village of Tryavna (wood-carving and icons), in addition to guided tours of Veliko Turnovo including the impressive Tsarevets Fortress. Veliko Turnovo offers good shopping (including paintings, antiques and other crafts), restaurants, bars, and cafes.

Veliko Turnovo is built over a series of precipitous hills divided by deep chasms and the Yantra River, and overlooked by the massive, mediaeval Tsarevets fortress complex. The old houses have been described as a form of "organic' architecture due to the manner in which they seem to cling to the hills between vines, flowering bean trees and lilacs. The town is steeped in history and was the capitral of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom from 1185 to 1396. It is surrounded by historic villages, churhces and monasteries such as the Dryanovski and Petropavloski Monasteries. The Tsarevets fotress is often illuminated on summer nights by a spectacular 'son et lumiere' light and music show.
