WOODS & WATER LOCATION MAP FLIGHTS GETTING ABOUT CAR HIREDelightful, private house within a peaceful garden situated just beyond the town centre beside the road leading to the Retezat. This comfortable house may be rented as a whole - ideal for a family seeking a degree of privacy. There are two double rooms upstairs with ashared bathroom, two living rooms a fully equiped kitchen, TV and ample space for parking. Food can be prepared in the kitchen or provided by the proprietors. Meals are excellent and combine local produce and a fabulous imagination. Recommended. French spoken, limited English.
The castle at Sântamaria-Orlea near Hateg was built in the 13th century by the Cânde Family, magyarised under the name Kendeffy. It was rebuilt in 1782 by Alexis Kendeffy and his wife, Cristina Bethlen. The castle is now a modest inn with large rooms with hot and cold water. Bathrooms are en suite in bedrooms or apartments. There is a restaurant and bar, and impressive vaulted dining room. This is a two star property with good facilities though it should be noted that accommodation is relatively basic, comfortable but not opulent. The location is superb, standing on a low hill overlooking Hateg on one side and the Retezat on the other.

It should be noted that service is very poor, presumably as the hotel would appear to have sufficient well-heeled guests from Bucharest business or political circles! Outdoor restaurant landscaped but food is nothing special, over-priced, waiters known to overcharge. Plenty better alternatives nearby. Should be the best hotel in town but not recommended despite its 4* rating.

An attractive private hotel with a modest restaurant located at the end of the road winding up through the modern hotels of the lower resort. Large rooms with en suite bathrooms, TV and balconies with superb views over the valley. Good value, friendly service.
Pleasant, private villa hotel in a leafy quarter of the resort.
German-style chalet in a peaceful location.
Typical communist-era high rise hotel with good facilities including terrace restaurant. Rooms refurbished and service is good. Views from balconies over the Danube.
