Historic 'eclectic' style hotel with an excellent location on the corner of Piata Unirii, in the centre of the city. Beautiful dining room, described well by Patrick Leigh Fermor in his 1930s travelogue 'Between the Woods & the Water', at which time the Continental was the famous 'New York'.

Good value. Rooms with en suite bathrooms, cable TV, minibar and telephone. All the facilities of a modern city hotel including restaurants, bar and exchange desk.

The Continental is currently (2007)
closed for refurbishment. It is rumoured that it has been sold to a private investor and is likely to reopen as a 4-5 star hotel, more fitting with its character and significance ... watch this space!

VILA CASA ALBA 4*, Cluj

One of two smart villa hotels situated on a leafy, residential street adjacent to the citadel hill. It offers 18 beds in double rooms and suites, all of them with private bathrooms, telephone and cable TV. There is a good restaurant, bar and terrace. It should be noted that Vila Casa Alba is very popular, especially at weekends when it often hosts wedding receptions which can be noisy.

HOTEL AGAPE (Cluj) 4*
One of the nicest hotels in Cluj. A smart, new hotel with excellent restaurant, and self-service 'Etterem' (Hungarian restaurant) in an historic building near Piata Unirii and the Banffy Palace gallery. Rooms with en suite facilities.

HOTEL RIMINI (Cluj) 4*
Rather kitsch, glitzy private hotel located amidst the villas above the old town.

HOTEL SIESTA (Cluj) 3*
Good value hotel in a side street near Piata Unirii. Limited facilities but 8 large comfortable rooms and 4 suites, all with en suite bathrooms, colour cable TV, telephone & minibar; buffet breakfast, room service, and internet access.

HOTEL VICTORIA (Cluj) 3*

The unusual modern architecture of the Victoria betrays it as the former communist party hotel in Cluj. This is an excellent value hotel recently refurbished with decent facilities and an excellent central location near the orthodox cathedral and national theatre. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms, cable TV and telephone. Other facilities include a restaurant offering international, vegetarian and traditional cuisine, a terrace garden which is a surprisingly peaceful in such a busy city, internet access, conference rooms, room and laundry services and parking.

HOTEL BELVEDERE 4*, Cluj

Formerly the Transilvania, this is a large communist-era high rise hotel overlooking the city from the citadel hil where it is now a firmly established and familiar landmark This 4* hotel was recently refurbished and has 290 beds in single or double rooms and apartments, all of them with private bathrooms. telephone, radio and cable TV. Excellent facilities include an air-conditioned restaurant offering a wide range of international and Romanian cuisine, night and day bars, coffee shop, swimming pool, room service, beauty and hair salons, exchange office, gym, massage and sauna.

Of special note is the indoor pool. Rooms also have balconies with a panoramic view over the city or over the surrounding hills. Steps lead down past the citadel to the town centre..

HOTEL SPORT, Cluj 2*

Another high rise, concrete hotel dating back to the communist era with an excellent, quieter location on the edge of the city park. Despite appearances it was recently refurbished, offers excellent value for money and is a popular choice for travellers. Rooms with en suite bathrooms, cable TV, and telephone. Facilities include restaurant, bar and pool.
