DAY ONE: 14 SEPTEMBER 2006

Scheduled morning flight from the United Kingdom to Sofia. Meet & Greet; transfer by air-conditioned minibus or coach to your hotel followed by a brief city tour of Sofia.  Own arrangements for dinner.

DAY TWO: 15 SEPTEMBER 2006

Breakfast.  Depart for the beautifully preserved, museum town of Koprivshtitsa, home to some of the finest half-timbered National Revival architecture in Bulgaria.  We traverse the Balkan Range by the 1450 metre high Troyan Pass (excellent long-reaching views over the Plain of Thrace towards the Rhodopes) to reach Troyan Monastery, best known for its frescoes.  We visit an exhibition of local arts and crafts at Oreshaka before continuing to our hotel in the romantic, ancient town of Veliko Turnovo, the mediaeval capital of Bulgaria with one of the most dramatic townscapes in Eastern Europe.  Lunch en route.  Own arrangements for dinner.

DAY THREE: 16 SEPTEMBER 2006

Breakfast before spending the morning exploring Veliko Turnovo including the vast fortified citadel of Tsaravets, perched high above the Yantra River, and the crafts bazaar of Samovdska Charshia.   After lunch we visit the picturesque museum village of Arbanassi and the remains of the roman city of Nicopolis ad Istrum. Evening free and own arrangements for dinner. Overnight: Veliko Turnovo.

Veliko Turnovo

DAY FOUR: 17 SEPTEMBER 2006

Breakfast. Visit to Dryanovo Monastery before climbing over the Balkan Range via the dramatic Shipka Pass, scene of the resistance of the Bulgarians and Russians against a much larger Turkish Army. Descend into the "Valley of the Roses" where we visit the picturesque Shipka Memorial church, with its vibrant colours and golden onion-domes, then two of the famous Thracian tombs: the Kazanluk tomb (UNESCO heritage site) and the recently discovered Goliama Kosmatka Tomb. Continue to Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second city, an attractive place steeped in history. Dinner.   Overnight at a hotel in the heart of the town.

National Revival Architecture, Sofia
DAY FIVE: 18 SEPTEMBER 2006

Breakfast. Morning tour of old Plovdiv with its steep cobbled streets and characteristic National Revival architecture, in particular dozens of colourful mansions with timber-framed oriels enabling them to expand outwards with each storey. Visit the Hindlian Mansion, the Roman Amphitheatre and Stadium, and the St. Constantine and Elena Church.  After lunch we continue into the Rhodope Mountains to visit Assenova Fortress and the Bachkovo Monastery.   Continue to the museum town and traditional mountain resort of Bansko, which lies at the foot of Mt.Vihren, the highest peak in the Pirin Mountains (2914m), where we check into our hotel.

DAY SIX: 19 SEPTEMBER 2006
Breakfast. Guided tour of Bansko then follow the Struma River between the Rila and Pirin Mountains to Sandanski (home of Spartacus) and then to the little, museum town of Melnik, with its white-washed houses and cobbled alleys set against a bizarre landscape of sandstone cones and rugged cliffs.  We sample the local Melnik red wine in a typical cellar carved into one of the sandstone pyramids, then make a brief trip to the fascinating Rozhen Monastery, situated on a plateau above the town.  Return to Bansko for dinner at a traditional restaurant.

Bachkovo Monastery,
Rhodope Mountains

DAY SEVEN: 20 SEPTEMBER 2006

After breakfast we traverse the spectacular Predela Pass, to arrive at Rila Monastery. This is Bulgaria's most visited tourist attraction, famed for both its architectural beauty and its mountain setting.  Rila Monastery, with its brightly frescoed church and fortified walls, is recognized by UNESCO as an important part of the World's Cultural Heritage. We will make a guided tour of the monastery, before driving to the capital, Sofia.  Visit the Alexander Nevski Memorial Cathedral and check-in at the hotel.  Lunch and dinner are included.
