Bassenthwaite Lake with Skiddaw
Northern Cumbria is a region of considerable diversity - stretching from the well-known mountaineering town of Keswick, on the shore of Derwentwater, northwards to Carlisle, Cumbria's only city, and the Scottish Borders. Inbetween we have the high mountains of Skiddaw and Blencathra, the Caldbeck Fells, and the fertile Eden Plain criss-crossed by ancient byways. To the west is the Solway Coast stretching from the fascinating, historic harbour town of Maryport in the south to Bowness-on-Solway at the end of Hadrian's Wall. The Solway, with its extensive views of the Scottish coast and the Galloway hills is a mecca for birdwatchers.
