Scheduled flight from UK to Sofia. Meet & Greet; transfer by air-conditioned coach to the village of Oreshak near Troyan Monastery (2 hours), the third largest in Bulgaria. Vist to the monastery and the halls of the National Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Oreshak if time permits. Dinner and check-in at Villa Terra Verde or similar 3-star hotel.
DAY TWO: 6 JUNE 2008
THE FESTIVAL OF ROSES
Breakfast. Continue to the romantic, ancient town of Veliko Turnovo - the mediaeval capital city of Bulgaria. Tour of the town including the vast fortified citadel and fortress of Tsarevets, perched high on the 'Royal Hill' above theYantra River. Lunch in the museum village of Arbanassi with its distinctive architecture and fascinating Nativity church. Continue via the Etura open air village museum and the dramaticShipka Pass over the Balkan Range, scene of the resitance of the Bulgarians and Russians against a much larger Turkish Army, to the Valley of Roses. Check in at your hotel near Kazanluk. Lesson in Bulgarian folklore dances with a professional choreographer before dinner and the official opening of the Festival of Roses in the evening.

DAY THREE: 7 JUNE 2008
Early breakfast to enable you to witness rose picking in the fields (roses must be harvested before the heat of the sun evaporates the precious oils). Visit to a modern and traditional distillery producing rose oil and see the production process (small gift for all visitors). We can also sample rose jam, Banitsa (typical Bulgarian pastry), and Rosaliika liqueur. Join the carnival procession on the main square in Kazanluk. Lunch. Visit the Goliama Kosmatka Thracian Tomb and the replica Kazanluk Thracian Tomb (UNESCO heritage site), and the spectacular Shipka Memorial church, with its vibrant colours and golden onion-dome. Continue up the Valley of Roses into the Sredna Gora Mountains to reach the beautifully preserved museum village of Koprivshtitsa. This is real highlight of any tour with its half-timbered National Revival style architecture and pastoral setting amidst wooded hills. Overnight in a 3-star hotel. Dinner.
DAY FOUR: 8 JUNE 2008
Breakfast. Continue to Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second city, an attractive place steeped in history. Tour of old Plovdiv with its steep cobbled streets and characteristic National Revival architecture, in particular dozens of colourful mansions with timber-framed oriels enabling them to expand outwards with each storey. Visit the Hindlian Mansion, the Roman amphitheatre and the St. Helena and Constantine Church. Lunch. Continue to Bachkovo Monastery in the Rhodope Mountains. Wine-tasting at a boutique wine-cellar in the village of Brestovita, an area best-known for its red Mavrud wines. Overnight in Koprivshtsa. Own arrangements for dinner.

Breakfast. Morning tour of Koprivshtitsa. Continue to Sofia, Bulgaria's capital. Panoramic city tour including the Alexander Nevsky cathedral, St.Sofia Church, Parliament Square, National Theatre and St. George Rotunda. Lunch included. Overnight at a comfortable 3-star hotel in the city centre. Own arrangents for dinner.

Roses are sometimes considered as
Bulgaria's "gold" with 70% of the world's rose extract
- "attar" - being produced here at a value of
US$ 45 million. 3000-6000 kg of blossom
are required to make just one litre
or the precious attar.
The remaining rosewater and pulp are used in
medicines and for making jam and the rosaliika
liqueur which may be tasted in Kazanluk.
